چکیده
Thalassemia is defined as a condition in which reduced rate of synthesis of one or more of the globin chains leads to defective haemoglobin production. Of the two major types, in alphathalassemia, occhain synthesis is absent or diminished and in beta-thalassemia, B-chain synthesis is absent or diminished. In B-thalassemia, anaemia occurs due to reduced B globulin, which in turn reduces HbA resulting in reduced MCHC and hypochromicity of the cells. Thalassemia minor is usually diagnosed by measuring concentration of HbA2, complete blood count and blood film examination. However, relatively simpler and inexpensive methods have been reported before for quick discrimination between iron deficiency and thalassemia minor trait. The present study is designed to estimate incidence of thalassemia minor using the proposed formula of England and Fraser in Pakistani population.

Does red blood cell distribution width (RDW) improve evaluation of microcytic anaemias?
The red cell distribution width (RDW) is an index of the variation in red cells size (anisocytosis). A study was conducted to examine the validity of using RDW in improving classification of microcytic anaemias. A total of 300 blood samples collected from a patient population aged 3 months to 55 years who were referred for haemoglobin electrophoresis were examined at the Aga Khan University Hos...
متن کاملPrevalence of Delta Beta Thalassemia Minor in Southern Iran
Background: Hb A2 is elevated in subjects with beta thalassemia minor but small percent of carriers have normal Hb A2 with elevated levels of HbF (2-10%). This type of thalassemia is called delta beta thalassemia, and can be missed in pre-marriage hematologic consults or screening which leads to increased risk of child birth with beta thalassemia major. Materials and Methods: In this prospe...
متن کاملPre-marriage Sickle Cell Screening Program in South Region of Iran, A Pilot Study on 50 Cases of Sickle Trait
Background: Studies have demonstrated that sickle cell trait can be found in an asymptomatic healthy carrier with normal complete blood count (CBC) and red blood cell (RBC) indices. According to Iranian Ministry of Health bulletin instructions, prenuptial Thalassemia Screening Program (TSP) primarily depends on RBC indices which are measured through a routine CBC. Only when these levels are bel...

متن کاملLow Hemoglobin among Pregnant Women in Midwives Practice of Primary Health Care, Jatinangor, Indonesia: Iron Deficiency Anemia or β-Thalassemia Trait?
Low hemoglobin (Hb) or anemia is common among pregnant women in developing countries which may cause adverse pregnancy outcomes and maternal deaths. Our study aimed to assess Hb level measured by midwives in primary health care facility at rural area of Jatinangor, Indonesia, and to explore whether the anemia was due to iron deficiency (IDA) or β-thalassemia trait (β-TT). Pregnant women (n = 10...
